Urban Eight

When a successful Maine restaurateur bought the top two floors of a building in downtown Portland, the ideas were already flowing.

Setting the tone for a balanced life.

Boasting ocean views, the home’s open layout created a blank canvas for personal expression and unique touches to bring balance to a busy urban life.

Collection and curation at the core.

With a career centered around cooking and creating, a commercial kitchen—complete with a built-in pizza oven, became an essential centerpiece of the home. The in-facing cafe-style bar was added for beautiful party spreads or a casual night in. Beyond the kitchen, a custom steel and glass bathroom, antique-salvaged doors, and a flying metal and wood staircase evoke contemporary masculinity throughout. Commercial elements like exposed brick and beams were juxtaposed with eclectic touches such as antique street lamps, contemporary art, and personal collectors pieces. The two floors of loft-style living were capped with a private roof deck for year-round entertainment.

A synergistic process.

Creative input from a homeowner with exceptional taste and a passion for architectural salvage resulted in a mutually exciting design process, with enough free reign to push the boundaries and integrate unexpected details into the plan. The sharing of concepts and inspirations led to a design that matched both character and lifestyle.
