Cast On

A Canadian couple was looking for a coastal Maine respite that would offer commanding views and water access, yet also respect for the land.

Searching for a coming home.

The selected build site was an especially complex and fragile shorefront setting with creative and environmental challenges. A careful balance of materials and simple forms produced an honest structure designed to maintain the sustainability and visibility of the precious surrounding sand dunes.

An invitation to weather together.

The substantial 4,500 sq. ft. home and guest home sits on driven piles to protect the structures, conserve the sand dune, and create the sensation of floating. Wood-framing, steel beams and classic red brick are understated enough to blend in but commanding enough to stand out. Rather than masking the steel, it remains thoughtfully exposed to the elements. The path leading down to the beach intersects the main home and guest home with an aerial bridge connecting the two. Invitations to weather the days together.
